Social Studies Overview 6th Grade
Sixth grade Social Studies students will focus on the people, places, and events of ancient civilizations in the eastern hemisphere. Some of the civilizations and regions we learn about are Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. 7th Grade Seventh grade US History focuses on the people, places and events of the first half of American History, with an emphasis on government. We begin by studying the migration, and geography of the pre-Columbian ancient civilizations. Following the pre-Columbian era, we analyze the causes and impact of significant events such as the various explorers, colonial settlements, the French and Indian War as well as well as the Revolutionary War. The course takes a turn into government, emphasizing important political documents such as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. The end of the school year finishes by focusing on the contributions of the first five presidents. 8th Grade Eighth grade US History focuses on the people, places and events of the second half of American History. We begin by analyzing and interpreting the War of 1812 and the contributions of historical figures such as Andrew Jackson and Tecumseh. We focus heavily on achieving our manifest destiny, through the Oregon Trail, the gold rush, and the Mexican-American War. The course then focuses on the divisions of America through the Civil War and Reconstruction Era. Toward the end of the year, students learn about America's establishment of a world power through topics such as the Spanish-American War, World War I, the roaring twenties, and World War II. My name is Thomas Resch. I graduated with a communication and journalism degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Following college, I spent a year in China studying Mandarin, as well as teaching English to a wide variety of age and ability level students for an American-Chinese joint venture school. I cherished my time in China and also had the opportunity to spend a significant amount of time traveling in Tibet, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. When I returned, I earned my teaching license at Carroll College. Traveling has enriched my life and provided me with an education that extends beyond the walls of the classroom. Although I cannot bring the students around the world, I want to bring the world to them. |
