 English-Literature Daily Assignments

Week of Feb. 14-17, 2012

6th Grade:   We continue to work on summarization skills.  There will be a few in-class assignments in regards to assessing this skill.  Students have also read a "free choice" book to read.  This book can be any subject or topic they choose, and will have two weeks to read it. Books must be completed by Wed. Feb. 22nd.  We will then be working on a literary project to go along with the book.  We also started Writer's Workshop this week.  Students will be writing a piece on a topic of their choosing.  Students have a current event due on Thurs., Feb. 16th.

7th Grade:  We continue to work on summarization skills.  There will be a few in-class assignments in regards to assessing this skill.  Students have Grammar Go-to-Press due on Wed., Feb. 15 and current event due on Thurs., Feb. 16th.

8th Grade:   We continue to work on summarization skills.  There will be a few in-class assignments in regards to assessing this skill.  Students have a cover letter for their resumes due on Friday, Feb. 17th.  They also have a current event due on Thurs., Feb. 16th and Wretched Writing due on Wed., Feb. 15th.

**All students in grades 6-8 will be required to keep a Writer's Notebook for the year.  Students were provided with a notebook to use for this project.  A full explanation of this assignment can be found under the downloads of this section.  Students are required to write a minimum of 4 pages in their notebooks each week.  The rubric for grading can be found on the explanation sheet.

**All students in grades 6-8 receive a new spelling sort every week.  There are three different spelling groups, which all have different word patterns that we are working on throughout the week.  Students receive these sorts on Mondays and are given time to practice their sorts in literacy lab each day.  They should also write their sort, as well as provide an explanation of why the oddball doesn't fit the patterns, in their notebooks by Friday of each week.  Friday's are when spelling tests are given.  Students are asked to write the word correctly, as well as identify the spelling pattern found in each word.  Credit is given on the test for each of these items, as well as for transfering the knowledge to spell other words.

**Students are required to keep track of their monthly assignments on an English-Lit. Monthly Memo sheet. Once a student has completed an assignment on the sheet, he/she should show Ms. Daly the completed assignment and she will sign off on the monthly memo stating that the assignment has been completed.  Some students forget to turn the assignments in after they have completed them.  A signature on the monthly memo states that it has been completed, NOT that it has been turned in.  We are constantly checking students' sheets and reminding them to turn the assignments in.  Please double check with your child and/or the teacher if you are unsure if the assignment actually got turned in.  Montly memos are due on the last day of each month.  These were given to the students at the beginning of the month, so that everyone is aware and on the same page for expectations and assignments for this class.
