On behalf of the school, staff, and students, I would like to thank you all for helping to make our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) day on February 1, 2012, a tremendous success. As BYOD is a new venture for Erin, we were all both nervous and excited to see how the day would roll out. As usual, our students exceeded expectations and proved that BYOD could have a regular place here at Erin School. From Band and Physical Education to 8th Grade Math and Science, our students and staff were able to successfully integrate even smaller devices like iPod Touches into every class and enhance their learning. We were also thrilled to have a reporter from the Journal Sentinel here during the event. Please be sure to read the local section of the February 2, 2012, Journal Sentinel or CLICK HERE to read the story.

How Do You Spell Success?
How about T-H-O-R-O-U-G-H-B-R-E-D? Eighth grader Alyssa Higley spelled that word correctly to win the Erin School Spelling Bee. Fifth grader Katarina Derse finished as the runner-up. Students in fourth through eighth grade competed in spelling bees in their own classrooms to determine the two participants for each grade in the school bee. The ten students started off with an easier round with words like 'pill.' The words became increasingly more difficult with words like 'nocturnal' and 'barracks.' The other participants included Camila E., Eshan O., Carriden K., Andrea O., Olivia B., Sam G., Travis H., and Zac S. All the students showed a fine knowledge of spelling (especially under pressure and in front of an audience), and we congratulate them on a job well done.
Focusing on measurement
The fourth graders have been using hands-on real-life measurement during the Geometry and Measurement Unit. Students took apart boxes to find the surface area, created complex figures and found the perimeter and area of many different shapes that the kids created themselves. They also used different objects, such as a portable playpen, recycling bins and crates to find the volume of the objects by using blocks and standard/metric measurement.
Enjoying time at the Schauer Center
Some of our talented students recently participated in the performance of Seussical: The Musical at the Schauer Center in Hartford. Many hours were spent in rehearsal, and they performed to various school groups, as well as the normal shows for the theater. Erin's first and fourth grade classes went to see one of the performances and enjoyed it immensely. Congratulations to Emma S., Morgan K., Josie D., Jordyn S., Morgan M., Camila E., Samantha C. and Kenna D. on a wonderful performance.
